a few years ago i wrote a short poem which contained this line.

i stumbled across it this morning.

when loss walks beside us, she always brings gifts with her.

in the wildness of her immediate presence they are not always visible.

still, a day will come when you will look up and know that she has left you changed and somewhere inside of you a songbird will be waiting for you to open your mouth and sing.
