build altars, instead

a beach pebble from my favourite pebbly beach on the edge of Long Loch

listen to me, you tender-bodied, souled-mammal, how your eyes are always scouting the perimeter of your life for danger.

the world is going to throw stones at you today.

it is what is.

when it happens you must tell the small child who lives inside your earth-skin that she is safe, that all is well, and all is well.

look, this is how you show her that you eat grace every day:

show her how to pick each stone up, show her how to stack them, how to make an altar.

how to give thanks for everything, how to make room for the kind things that have not yet left their home for yours, how they are surely on their way.

you don’t have to name them.

you can call each one, ‘thank you’.

this will be enough for both of you.

this will be your offering.

may your Monday be kind and generous, with opportunities to bless others and also rich with the presence of our God.

don’t throw those stones back.

build altars, instead.
