surely i am tucked up so tightly
between your body and your wings
so close to the thrumming of your heart, how you are
God-of-the-beating-heart
God-of-the-warm-nest
God-of-the-stay-close-to-me-and-you-will-be-safe
how you mother me, and mother me, and mother me
how your feathers are my refuge, my safe place
everything about you is faithful
everything that you are, can be trusted
even by a fearful body such as mine
you hold no anger towards the places where i have slipped
you plant no disappointment where i have let myself down
the places where i have robbed my own life of peace
because you call yourself love, right from the beginning
you have told me to call you this, even when others have said
‘no, our God does not belong to you’
you have turned my face towards your face
{and isn’t this enough for all that i am, and for all the places
where i will still fall over my own feet}
you are the name that i return to
you are the ancient walls that surround me
and i will choose your feathered presence as my shield, your soft breast
as my home.
