Poem: How to wage hope.

it has always been this way, you know—people seeing God only in themselves.

there are so many stones about.

—dear God, they fit a hand so comfortably.

instead we might sit in the company of a tree and listen to a blackbird singing its song—how it wages hope with its life.

it knows nothing of sharp edges, or bitterness.

rocks and stones.

—though they do exist.

we could tell ourselves that this is a gift.

we could tell ourselves that we are a gift.

—a heart that is soft.

we could wage hope with every moment that is left of our lives.

walk past everything that can be thrown—choosing instead

everything that can be given.

— how to wage hope
